I learned today that although I can ride the rollers for six seconds with my eyes closed while listening to "Aqualung," I can not for seven seconds without sliding not so gently off the right side. It is not clear what the outcome would be if listening to "Killing me Softly With His Song."

Since this is a post about having ones eyes closed, I think I am entitled to use a photo of Sophia Loren . . .

O2 and I managed to get in six hours of real "wheels goin' round and round" time. Only fell once, seems like quite an accomplishment on icy roads.

on Thanksgiving . . .
It was a spectacular morning.

Up and over Hawk Ridge, wondering

why no one else was out and about.

Up Maxwell to the "fruit roads," when . . suddenly . . . fresh Pugsley tracks . . It could be one of many. Lost the tracks back on Maxwell. Up to Strand, over to the Lester River Rd, to Beyer, Evan and Wahl. On Lakewood Jct, the mysterious tracks once again . . .

Fast forward 24 hours . . . still riding alone, 15 miles from the warmth and safety and security of home, I stopped to snap this photo. I noticed a few loose spokes.

Loose spokes and puncture, nothing like a little cold fingered bike repair in the woods.

Fast forward another 24 hours.

Does anyone know where this is?

It's Hwy 61, never hear of Arthur Rohweder before. Neither had I.

My final misadventure of the four day Thanksgiving weekend: I guess the
road to Brighton Beach was just a bit more ice than I anticipated! Slid about 15 feet on glaze ice that was so slick and clean I did not even get my jacket dirty.

I'd like to extend a Very Special Thanks to the driver of the silver SUV, who at 2:15 this afternoon while East bound on the North Shore Scenic Drive chose to place his right rear wheel in just the proper position and accelerate at just the right second to send enough salt laden slush onto me to nearly knock me off the road. I'd also like to thank him for completely covering my glasses in said slush, for saturating my clothing and for filling my mouth full of especially tasty salty snow (yum). In his defense it should be noted there were no other cars anywhere to be seen and I was as far to the right as I could safely be. Again, a Very Special Thank You.

Other than that . . . Dave and I had a great ride!

I was a bit surprised that nearly the entire road was still snow covered. Perfect fun on ice!

Upon learning that the mysterious "riders of the dark" were moving, my decision was made. Ride I must. Plan was to ride Orange. She'd been sitting patiently waiting for her time of renewal and glory

Four revolutions from home,

"ker thunk . . ." That didn't feel right. I jumped off for a quick look, only to find

a self-destructed rear hub.

Would BLONDIE be up to the task?

I quickly saddled up, pointed Blondie downhill wondering "would anyone else

(save the riders of the dark) be silly enough

to venture out,
or would I be alone . .

Much to my joy, amusement and bemusement I was not to be alone!

Tim and I headed bravely into the gale force winds along the shore of the greatest of lakes, moving at times as fast as 12 mph, often we were reduced to 8 - 9 mph as we struggled to stay upright.

When we reached the end of the pavement near Two Harbors, Tim turned to head to the Mocha Moose, while I ventured alone up the gravel ahead.

Apparently I appeared a bit worse for wear when I returned to the Moose (or so said the customers).

Why is his coffee bigger than mine?

After a few well earned calories, it was back on the road again.

Leaving Tim at home, I continued on for a while longer, logging nearly four hours, while perhaps not up to the standards of the "riders of the dark," an effort nonetheless.
Which left me with four hours of bike repair and maintenance, and 12 ounces of water in each boot.

It was nice to be back riding Blondie on the gravel

not having to worry about touching someones wheel (oops!)

It was a bit colder than expected . . . The Mocha Moose came to the rescue

Somehow . . . I had a tail wind both ways

She saw a fork in the road. . .

so she took it . . .

First a little history. As some of you know, my daughter is a student at a couple of institutions of higher learning.

It is now clear to me that such an education does not necessarily imbibe one with a great deal of "common sense." In 90 degree heat, she announced she wished to go for a bike ride with he dad. Not wishing to appear wimp like, of course I agreed and off we went . . . hoping it would be somewhat cooler by the shore.

As others of you know, and are painfully aware . . . During a surgery a couple of years ago I forgot to ask the surgeon to install the "optional fluid retention device" for which I have long lusted. (Admittedly this does have its advantages. For instance, when I am tired I can simply announce "I need to stop for a moment" )

Tired I was . . . time to stop . . . Of course I assumed my loving daughter would stop and wait for me . . . no . . . just like one of the guys she left me . . .

No worries I thought . . . I'll catch up to her . . .

All was on plan until she disappeared . . .

FINALLY, THE POINT OF THE STORY

Out of nowhere, without provocation or suggestion

SHE TURNED DOWN A GRAVEL ROAD

It must be genetic

That's right . . . we rode gravel. Me on my gravel rig with 32mm tires

Lauren on her road bike with 23mm tires . . .

That serves as a warning to everyone . . . there is no reason

you can't ride these roads with the bikes you have

I hope to see you all riding gravel soon

I'll miss her when she returns to college this week.

I knew after being hammered yesterday morning at 6:00 AM, and after being a nail yesterday evening at 6:00 PM, I needed an easy, happy ride

As I saw the boys marshaling, I knew it wouldn't happen

(that is the proper spelling by the way)

After recovering from an injury, I see Jymy B

I think this is him saying "Hello," but I'm not really sure,

Russ is speaking in another strange language I don't understand

I can at least understand Tim

I quickly said "goodbye" to the boys and watched them ride off into the distance

I maintained a steady, luxurious pace as I turned off to the great unknown

I found a smiling totem

and spinning pinwheels

As I suspected, I was soon saying "hello" to the boys again

The sign said "left," so I went that way

then right

I always wonder what buildings like this once were

even though there is no sign, why not?

So, while the boys were punishing each other, for me the day was a pleasant mix of old pavement, new pavement, gravel and single track.

The day after a long effort at the Velo Duluth Split Rocks Tour

No one but Rich showed at Brighton Beach . . . so he rode alone to the Mocha Moose and beyond . . .

No idea who these guys were . . . but they were fast!

You can't see them all here, but there were seven of them, almost ran me over as they went by. On the other hand . . . they were only fast for five miles, then they were through!

Steve had the great idea to ride to Ely on day 1,

and ride back the next day.

Three of us took him up on the challenge, and off we went.

Managed to make it all the way to the Mocha Moose without stopping,

where Kayla not only made us breakfast . . . but made it with love!

For your info, I have been hard at work on another blog "Duluth Road Cyclists"

thus my apparent disregard for Riding Orange!

Since today's post was all about "mis"adventure . . . here it is:

(ed. note: When the blog writer was asked if it rained,

he had but two words to say: "Ask Noah . . .")

Yes Virgina . . . we had rain, lots of rain.

Had you joined us, you would have enjoyed 1 hour and 33 minutes

of wonderful, dry riding.

At exactly 7:33 that changed.

Rain . . . wind . . . lightning . . . we had it all.

We also had 28+ mph ascents and 40+ mph descents during a downpour.

YEEHA!!

At one point I was wishing I had my

nose plugs to keep the water out.

We arrived at the Mocha Moose after over 70 miles of non-stop riding

Enjoyed a quick coffee and were gently scolded to "mop the floor next time"

To his credit, "the Man Who Can Not be Trusted" redeemed himself

as he allowed me to "fasten" myself to his wheel for most of the 91 miles.

Six Silly Boys

Today six brave souls (read: silly boys) appeared nearly simultaneously at

"the Church" for a morning of high spirited riding.

I know, I know . . . it looks suspiciously like four . . .

believe me . . . there were six!

Although this portion of Jean Duluth Rd from Zimmerman to Normanna Rd

beat up Mr Jim B . . . the rest of us paid for it as he sped down

Howard Gnesen at a fast clip (graciously, he never exceeded 27mph).

It was fortunate for us all that Mr Jim J was there to reel him in.

We do need to explain the course to him next time as he took a bit of a shortcut home (somehow this let him avoid that crazy hard hill on Howard Gnesen from Ridgeview to Kenwood Edison . . . I wonder if he knew that?)

I would suggest we all chip in and get him a road bike (instead of the full on

TT bike), but I fear he will be too fast.

Mr John H was feeling the effects of jet lag today,

I know he will be back on his game shortly. That is good for us, since he cuts a wide swath through the wind.

In spite of the fog, we had a blast!

What a great ride it was!

Morning fog and cold. Sick for two days, still that nagging cramp in my right calf. Would anyone show at 7:00 AM this morning. I sure hoped not, with the fog and wet roads I half expected to be the only brave soul . . . and without telling anyone my plan was to ride to the church and back home.

It was not to be!

Following me into the church parking lot was Ron. No worries I thought, I can convince one guy to ride slow. Then Joe shows . . . still I thought I had a chance . . . then out of the corner of my eye I see Russ . . . damn . . . there goes that plan. With this many riders there is no way we will ride slow.

7:00 AM came and we were off. It really wasn't as bad as I expected.

Within a couple of minutes I noticed Russ had dropped behind. Nope, he saw Jim coming and went back for him.

As I look back, I see another lone rider coming after us. As he nears, I realize it is Dan. oh oh . . . now I know it will be game on.

Somehow we manage to ride the first 10 miles at a reasonable pace. As we climb that hill around the corner from Zimmerman to Lismore the pace accelerates. Later I heard a couple of riders say that was the fastest they had ever ridden it. No let up . . . Dan leads the way down Lismore leaving riders falling in his wake.

As we pass the McQaude road . . . another rider . . . Jack ... this now makes 7 crazy guys riding on a cold, foggy morning. What's up with that, and just as perplezing, where is Farrow (I later learned he had a very important, justifiable prior commitment. WELL DONE SOPHIE!!!)

Do to my advanced age (nah . . . let's blame it on being sick) . . . I realize I need a break and head back to pick up the dropped riders and bring them back to the group.

We regroup and ride together to Clover Valley. Interestingly, a couple of riders ask about riding gravel!

The ride to the Moose was reasonable, but gee . . . I really needed to stop. After a couple small cups of coffee . . . about one thousand coughs . . . and just watching Dan eat that big home made roll . . . we are off.

We stay together for 6 miles. On the hill Russ, Dan and I somehow accelerate past the others. We ride together, rotating perfectly for 3 or 4 miles when I am dropped like a dirty shirt . . . my ticket punched . . . by some old guy on a single speed and a young guy with animal stuff on his shorts . . .

Fortunately for me, Jim comes from behind and pulls me for a few miles . . . amazingly, I look up to see Dan alone . . . what has happened to Russ . . . it turns out he must have stopped, taken out the extra gear he had in his pocket and changed it, and simply rode away from all of us . . . that darn guy on the blue bike left all of us breathless . . . Either that or he was just plain the fastest.

Well Done Russ!

I struggled up the hill with Joe . . . went home and promptly fell asleep (after eating a very large pickle of course)

It was truly a great day . . .

Next time I must remember to bring my camera.

Great ride today. Tough to get everyone together on a holiday weekend, no worries . . . just ride a couple of times with a couple of groups and when they all need to go (read: wimp out), just keep on ridin'
Since I was alone, I thought it time to ride some gravel.
After the mandatory coffee stop at the Mocha Moose, I continued down ole scenic 61 to Knife River. At the railroad bridge one can hop on the Old North Shore Road. This is a particularly scenic stretch of gravel . . . almost all the way back to Duluth.
After about 6 miles of minding my own business . . . I notice a bit of a change at a bridge crossing . . . no worries thought Rich . . . I'm sure they just changed the barriers . . . (ahh . . . my favorite phrase: "minding my own business")

oops . . . maybe they took the bridge out?

No worries, just a scenic water crossing!

My oldest daughter Lauren is an engineering student at Dartmouth College, and an avid biker.
She has taken it upon herself to begin the design of a new style of beginner clipless pedal system (you know, the type you clip into . . . but what of that?)
I'm sure we have all made fools of ourselves as we become stuck in our pedals!
(I remember this happening to me twice last year, once on the sidewalk in front of our house. Said daughter had to come outside and unclip me as I lay helplessly laughing on the cruel concrete)
Which direction is she going? Don't know . . . I think she has some interest in a magnetic system similar in concept to Mavic EZ rides (which have received mixed reviews).
I've suggested she base her design on a Mtn bike system, since the shoes are so much easier to walk in.
She is not working on a high end competition pedal, in fact the opposite.
This will be a pedal for beginners, something to help reduce the fear and trepidation we all first felt as we clipped into our clipless pedals for the first time.
A BIG THANK YOU TO POTTER, WHITEY and DEAN AT THE SKI HUT FOR HELPING HER OBTAIN SAMPLE PEDALS FROM WHICH TO BEGIN HER DESIGN!
If anyone out there has any thoughts or ideas, let me know and I will pass them along. I'm sure she will be willing to work on other bike projects as well.

It's been awhile

OK, so it's been awhile since I have updated this blog.

Two people today whined about my apparently lazy attitude, so for them . . . here I go.

First a bit of explanation: I have purposefully taken a hiatus as my DBD friends pontificate, hypothesize, verbalize, socialize, communicate, transmit, remember, recall, recollect and otherwise relate their personal Trans Iowa experience.

For me the TI was confusing . . . first I did not get in, was #7 on the wait list. Then . . .the hoped for communique . . . I was in! Excited I was, rode with my friends for many hours . . . wondered what it would be like . . . excited / nervous and above all, wonder.

Just before the event, I received a call from one of the companies I work with in Germany. They asked if I would attend BAUMA with them. BAUMA is the world's largest trade show of any kind, it is focused on construction and road building equipment. It is an every third year happening., always in Munich.

(given that the event is in Munich, Germany . . . I somehow thought my beer consuming friends and compatriots would understand).

How could I say "no?" Simply put, I had to go . . .

I waited until travel arrangements were actually made and finalized, the ticket purchased . . . all systems go before I told anyone.

I hated the thought of sending an email to Guitar Ted and informing him of my conflict / conundrum. He seemed to understand. Charlie, Tim and Jason . . . I needed to tell them personally. Charlie and Tim seemed to implicitly understand. Jason was away in the Florida sun. I bumped into him at the end of a bike ride and told him . . . it was clear that he thought I was kidding, I think it took a day or two for him to believe me.

I was out . . . out . . .

Then, the volcano . . . more confusion . . . what would happen? Would I make it to Munich, or would my flight be cancelled . . . and I be able to ride the TI?

Confused does not begin to express my new emotional state. After putting in so many miles and hours with the boys my heart and promise was with them . . . yet I had backed out . . . what should I do?

I decided the roller coaster was just too much. I would bypass TI v6, not contact Guitar Ted or my friends . . . just let it be.

Tuesday, 20 April came . . . to the Duluth airport . . . to Chicago . . . my flight is not cancelled, yet I really doubt I will make it since the airports are only beginning to open.

I made it only a few hours late. The show was slow, many people from the world over did not make it.

Learned and saw a lot, met a few friends from the world over I had not seen in awhile, all in all a great experience.

The evening of the TI, the moment I returned to the hotel, I checked the blog and was transfixed by what I read and heard. Imagine my surprise the next morning when I heard the result.

Since my return I have logged a couple hundred miles and read every account of the TI I can find, and can only hope Charlie, Tim and Jason know how difficult it was for me . . . how much I wanted to be with them.

Next weekend is the Almanzo 100 . . . I look forward to it.

What I learned at the Ragnarok 105

1) Never, ever buy a new geared bike on Thursday after 12,000 + miles on a single speed and expect to race it on Saturday! (although I did ride it for 39 miles on pavement on Thursday and Friday)
(Tim made it clear to me upon completing Chili . . . he was going to ride it as much as possible, to get used to it. I guess there was a reason?)
It took 70+ miles of the Rag to remember how to ride . . . it was kinda fun to play with those gears
2) Never, ever get caught out. Pay attention to who the riders are, and what they are capable of. Stay with the break!
(Charlie made this very clear in many strategy lectures. I should have listened and paid closer attention (read: any attention).
3) Always follow Praman when he is riding a pugsley downhill. It's kinda like motor pacing. (I am quite certain those loud "bangs" you heard were actually Praman crossing the sound barrier.)
4) Never let Palmer sneak around at the finish as you slam on the brakes to avoid hitting the Harley rider who is paying absolutely no attention! (well done Jim!)

Still . . . had a gas . . . can't wait for 2011!

A big Thank You to all the boys today: Tim, Charlie, Jeremy (aka Jason) and Dave (short time).
Were it not for these guys you would not be reading this because I'd still be out there somewhere.
In fact I needed so much help I think even the real Jason pulled me for awhile.
Good ol' Tim . . . pulled 60+% of the ride . . . we needed him.
(MG: If you are readin' this . . . remember . . . Tim said "Do not believe a word Rich says . . ." I love a good enigma . . . which one is it?)
Word of advice for Charlie:

The Patch goes over the hole . . . Not the area next to it (I understand this is a complex concept). I think Charlie may hold the world record for number of tubes used in one stop (rumor is tube patching will soon be an Olympic sport) This repair stop at the Mocha Moose at mile 26 made for tube #4.

Charlie learned his lesson well . . . for a mere 50 miles later:

Farrow was seen instructing our lead rider on the finer points of puncture repair (as if he does not have enough experience of his own)

Why Orange Anyway

I am asked often "Why Orange . . . why not chartruese or turquoise?"

The reason is simple . . . "Hendricks," and by extension I, am Dutch.

Humbled, Tumbled, Cramps and Road Rash!

(If you say that just right . . . it almost rhymes; OK, maybe not)

CIRREM . . . What a blast! I have already sent in my card for 2011.

Before I continue, a moment of sincere silence.

Those of You that know me, know I have made several trips and spent a fair amount of time in and around Concepcion, Chile, the epicenter of Saturday's earthquake. To date I have not been able to reach any of my friends and associates in the area. I can only hope they are OK. Concepcion has been destroyed five times since the 1600's by earthquakes. A beautiful city it is, with lovely inhabitants.

Back to CIRREM.

Many, Many thanks to Kent and the other organizers. They did an A#1 job, right on, spot on.

The morning buffet was fab . . . too much to eat.

Upon being handed the day's cue card . . . and realizing there were some 38 turns, I quickly decided I would simply put the card in my pocket, and make certain I was always with someone who "knew where they were going (mistake . . .)

The race began just after 10:00 AM, temp a pleasant 15 degrees. It was apparent immediately that some of the boys came to race . . . really race. The first eight or so miles were relatively flat on hard packed snow and ice. I would be remiss in not honestly admitting a bit of initial nerves. Once I learned to ride it, it was darn nice.

About five miles in I felt my chain drop . . . egads, this is going to be a long ride (little did I know . . .) Turns out it was not off . . . I think I hit a patch of glare ice and just did the instant no resistance spin thing.

By this time the group was gone . . . long gone. No way I was going to sprint to catch them (riding O1 on ice, they on those silly geared things). I was perfectly happy just ridin' my bike.

I quickly realized this was not to be an easy ride. This part of Iowa is never flat; hills, often big hills (more on this later)

About 12 miles in I caught up with Matt Gersib (Of Salsa fame) When Matt learned of my hometown . . . he waxed poetically, on and on . . . about some chap named "Farrow!" Seems Mr Farrow is held in very high regard by said Salsa rider!

Matt and I decided we were having a pleasant time chatting: Knowing the boys up front were doing anything but chatting. We concluded our concept was far more enjoyable for a February ride. We discussed how cool the "PCL Gravel World Championships" will be.

Shortly thereafter we were caught by a couple of other single speed boys . . . off we went. Led by Squirrel we soon caught the 2nd group. Great I thought, effort can be reduced!

I've spent a great deal of time riding in a bunch, I feel comfortable and safe . . . I'm happily riding along "minding my own business when (yup, those words of terror) . . . I sense a rider in a brown jacket bearing down on me from the right . . . oh oh I thought as he pushes into me . . . which of course causes my front wheel to overlap the rear wheel of a leading rider . . . we all know where this is heading . . . CRASH . . . of course the guy in brown keeps upright . . . the rider following me comes to a safe stop ("that was close"). I pop up, handlebars askew, hole in tights . . . oh well . . . only 50 more miles.

the "tumble and road rash"

(to make matters all the worse, I received a very specific email from an unnamed DBD rider last week admonishing me "not to crash!")

By this stage the road surface had begun to improve, an attentive rider can almost always find an ice free line.

The hills really enter the picture: up - down . . . up - down . . . repeat.

For Rich on O1 this means close or erase the gap on the climbs, get dropped on the "flats."

At about 20 miles, for reasons I do not grasp . . . I am beset with muscle cramps like I have never experienced. This is far to early . . . 20 miles, only 1:15 into the ride (again I think, this is going to be a long day!)

up - cramp - down . . . up -cramp - down . . . repeat

Soon the only check point was on me, since I was not using my cue card (as earlier noted), I had to wait (stubborn me). Ten minutes I waited until a rider "rode through . . ." Oh well, my decision, as silly as it was, had been made, the commitment to myself kept.

In a somewhat silly fashion I told myself; "self; the 2nd half can not possibly be as hilly as the first"

The first turn clarified that picture:

up - cramp - down - up - cramp - down . . . repeat.

Then a change . . . at the 2nd hill of the 2nd half:

up - cramp - walk - down - up - cramp - walk- down . . . repeat.

I was buoyed by the realization that all of the SS riders were walking (the humble)

To give you two ideas of the hills:

1) When I saw one looming hill in the distance I actually laughed to myself!

up - cramp - walk - down - up - cramp - walk - down . . . repeat

2) On several descents I neared 40mph (yes, on icy gravel . . . what was I thinking?)

up - cramp - walk - down - up - cramp- walk - down . . . repeat

Seven times I walked the top portion of the hill . . . and have no regrets.

up - cramp - walk - down - up - cramp - walk - down . . . repeat

By this time even my wrists were cramping. Very strange I thought . . . I kept drinking thinking, hoping the problem would resolve:

up - cramp - walk - down - up - cramp- walk - down . . . repeat

Finally . . . I'm on 105th st . . . I know I am close to the finish! Over Hwy 35 . . . can't be far now . . . I know Cumming is only one mile East of the hwy.

Why am I still riding? It can only be because for the first time of the ride I am on a flat road with the wind at my back! Heck . . . no reason to pay attention to the cue cards I am not paying attention to . . . I might as well ride past the turn on 30th Ave and put in a few extra miles and 20 minutes. . .

Pulling into the Cumming Tap I had nothing but a smile on my face . . . It was a blast . . .

I had a bit of work to do before heading out Sunday morning:

Of final, and important note: I had to make a stop in Ames Iowa for pickle juice.

Avarice at Amity Continued and Concluded!

You may recall my encounter with Big Blue several weeks ago, and my conversation with an unnamed Pugsley rider of dubious renown (in no way associated with a group loosely known as "DBD")
You may also recall my extensive research of MN Statutes, and my conclusion that we are indeed entitled to ride on Grant in Aid trails to our heart's content.
Not being 100% assured, ensured or insured . . . I chose to pursue the question/issue a bit further.
I had an opportunity to speak with three of Duluth's finest. As expected they were not really too sure, but thought we are well within our rights. (they all expressed shock at the actions of Big Blue).
Still not satisfied I thought who better than a snowmobile riding game warden, a member of our very own MN DNR to answer my query.

Before I gave voice to my question, I prefaced it by asking him not to pretend to know, to only answer if he was 100% certain. As to not insult the gun toting officer I thought it best to inform him that I do not expect any peace officer to know all of the laws of our fine land (I mean that, how could anyone?).
He smiled at me, and affirmed our right to ride! Grant in Aid trails are indeed open to all (unless posted differently of course).
Further, and of his own accord, he told me we are not required to purchase a "sticker." As it happens, Grant in Aid trails are not funded solely by the purchase of state trail snowmobile stickers.
Bottom line: Fear not young rider . . . ride to your heart's content, But ride with grace, humility and concern for others on the trail.

What happens when You are away?

Yup, yesterday's was a great ride. Just under 100 miles, around 2000' of climbing, expended about 4600 calories.

Started cold, got colder . . . why is it colder after dawn anyway?

Climbing was more comfortable than descending, the windchill was off the chart! Good thing I had an extra hat to use as insulation in areas that . . . well . . . areas you just do not want cold.

At one point on our cold morning the lead rider (after realizing he had not seen me for ten miles) turned and asked "Rich, are you OK?" Funny I thought . . . I've been behind you because it is probably 15 degrees warmer!

But once the sun was fully up . . . it was SPECTACULAR! Too bad a full 1/2 of our contingent had previous commitments and had to leave early. (I think the major climb left them breathless . . .)

The subject of this photo asked that I note upon publication: "he does not normally look this way." Frankly, I have no idea what he means, he always looks this way. (ed)

The days lone drama (each and every ride must have a minimum one drama):

For some reason, when my camelback hose finally thawed beneath several layers of clothing . . . there must have been pressure in the bladder . . . it blew the valve off the hose! Somewhere around 10 ounces of sticky red stuff saturated my outer two layers . . . (there must be a lesson there somewhere . . . if I can only find it.)

And to answer the days question: "What happens when you are away for an eight hour bike ride?" I offer the following;

Yup . . . a new cat arrived. My youngest promises me she will only be here for two weeks . . . Do you think I can believe her?

As I was minding my own business

By now gentle reader you must know whenever I use these words only one outcome is possible . . . drama. Saturday's ride in the sunshine did not disappoint!
Bluebird skies, warm temperatures . . . in short, a nearly perfect day for a winter bike ride on the trails.
Up Vermilion I went, right turn onto the trail system (somewhere near "lost in Woodland")
Great happy ride down. Who do I see but Jason and Bride (hi Liz)! Nice chat about bikes, riding and work.
Continue on I do, to Lester Park . . . having a great day! Others are out, riding, walking and skiing. Everyone cheerful and happy.
Turn around, head back uphill (I actually prefer that . . .) Across Maxwell, over the bridge and up Amity Creek.
Cheerfully riding I am, when suddenly, out of nowhere . . . a big blue Arctic Cat Bearcat Z1, engine probably displacing somewhere near 7 billion cc's.
Before I continue, I must tell you: heretofore all meetings and experiences with snowmobilers have been nothing but positive. They have been polite and friendly, most wave, some stop to chat. Never been even a bit of an issue or problem. (I must confess I have been a bit surprised by this, my entire opinion of snowmobilers having been somewhat altered)
Back to Big Blue . . .
Foul words from his mouth (I think there must have been a mouth somewhere from under his helmet). Telling me I don't belong, telling me how stupid I am, yes, even a few four letter words uttered before his statements of "fact." I decide the best, in fact only option is to keep riding . . . and simply acknowledge his presence.
Suddenly he threatens to "take my bike from me!" (Just how does he propose to do that?) I keep riding.
He asks my name, I decide to give it to him, I have nothing to fear.
Perhaps my polite, non-argumentative approach was too much for Big Blue . . .
He suddenly moves ahead, then in front of me at a 45 degree angle, no more than three feet ahead.
Oh oh I think . . . this may end poorly. Then I think to myself: "self . . . what is he going to do? You a relatively fit guy on a bike, he off the sled dressed in a big one piece suit . . . no way he is going to hurt you, unless he decides to run you over (not likely I hope).
Instead, and again from a distance of no more than three feet he opens the throttle wide open . . . and proceeds to fill my face full of snow.
I'm a bit stunned and surprised by the entire encounter and simply continue riding . . . I am a bit concerned for others others on the trail at this moment and decide to do a quick loop up and back to be certain other walkers and riders I knew were on the trail are OK.
When I am convinced I was the only party assaulted by Big Blue I simply continued my ride.
About five minutes later I come across a rider on a Pugsley (this rider shall remain unnamed). I decide to flag him down, chat with him, see if he too had encountered Big Blue.
No he had not . . . when I related my tale . . . much to my surprise he agreed with Blue! He told me that in fact we do not have the right to ride on any trails designated "Grant in aid!" He was unsure if the trail we were on falls into this category, but again . . . assured me Blue was right. At that moment a walker came into view. I asked him if this person was allowed on the trail. He told me technically he is not!
At this point I decided this rider may not know what he is talking about. Sure I figure, if the trail crosses "private land," perhaps . . . but public land, seems nearly impossible.
He assures me he knows what he is talking about, claims to have been instrumental in many of the trails in Duluth. I ask about state statutes regarding and relating to Grant in Aid trails . . . he tells me the law is very hard to find . . . I might have to go to the snowmobile clubs to find out (is that like a fox in a hen house?)
Being a man of curiosity I vow to myself to find the truth when I return home (those of you who know me know this was inevitable!)
It was not difficult . . . as I see it ... Big Blue and other rider are factually incorrect.
YOU BE THE JUDGE: 2009 MN Statute " 85.018 TRAIL USE; VEHICLES REGULATED, RESTRICTED"

Important parts for your review. I think you will find nothing prohibits non-motorized use on Grant in Aid trail.

Subd. 2.Authority of local government.

(a) A local government unit that receives state grants-in-aid for any trail, with the concurrence of the commissioner, and the landowner or land lessee, may:

(1) designate the trail for use by snowmobiles or for nonmotorized use from December 1 to April 1 of any year; and

(2) issue any permit required under subdivisions 3 to 5.

(b) A local government unit that receives state grants-in-aid under section 84.794, subdivision 2, 84.803, subdivision 2, or 84.927, subdivision 2, for any trail, with the concurrence of the commissioner, and landowner or land lessee, may:

(1) designate the trail specifically for use at various times of the year by all-terrain or off-road vehicles or off-highway motorcycles, for nonmotorized use such as ski touring, snowshoeing, and hiking, and for multiple use, but not for motorized and nonmotorized use at the same time; and

(2) issue any permit required under subdivisions 3 to 5.

(c) A local unit of government that receives state grants-in-aid for any trail, with the concurrence of the commissioner and landowner or land lessee, may designate certain trails for joint use by snowmobiles, off-highway motorcycles, all-terrain and off-road vehicles.

Subd. 3.Motorized use; permits, restrictions.

Permits may be issued for motorized vehicles, other than those designated, to use a trail designated for use by snowmobiles, off-highway motorcycles, all-terrain or off-road vehicles. Notice of the permit must be conspicuously posted, at the expense of the permit holder, at no less than one-half mile intervals along the trail, for the duration of the permit. Permits shall require that permit holders return the trail and any associated facility to their original condition if any damage is done by the permittee. Limited permits for special events such as races may be issued and shall require the removal of any trail markers, banners and other material used in connection with the special event.

Subd. 4.Nonmotorized use trails.

No motorized vehicle shall be operated on a trail designated for nonmotorized use. This subdivision does not apply to motorized wheelchairs or other motorized devices operated by an individual who is physically disabled.

Subd. 5.Motorized vehicle trails restricted.

(a) From December 1 to April 1 in any year no use of a motorized vehicle other than a snowmobile, unless authorized by permit, lease or easement, shall be permitted on a trail designated for use by snowmobiles.

(b) From December 1 to April 1 in any year no use of a motorized vehicle other than an all-terrain or off-road vehicle and an off-highway motorcycle, unless authorized by permit, shall be permitted on a trail designated for use by all-terrain vehicles, off-road vehicles, or both, and off-highway motorcycles.

Attack of the Snow Snakes 2

After four days of no riding due to a slight cold, I was really looking forward to today!
Then: Again . . . while minding my own business . . . the attack of the snow snake!
Yikes! then, bummer . . . it was a good thing I had 12+ miles of walking practice at TUSCOBIA or I may not have survived.
Thank you to all my good friends who came to my aide, and whisked me home to safety (even to those of you who did not answer my call of distress.)
I can only look forward to tomorrow . . . and of early Sunday morn, meeting in the murky shadows of the Billy Irvin.
I do wonder: Why can I ride over 10,000 miles in 12 months on O1 (single speed road bike) without a vicious attack of this sort, but can only manage some 600 miles on O2?

25 Years and Malaise

First and foremost . . . CONGRATULATIONS to Farrow, Buffington and Kershaw at the Arrowhead 135. And Jeremy, UNBELIEVABLE on a SINGLE SPEED! WELL DONE BOYS! (I shall be forever humbled by Mr Kershaw)

It had been a peaceful 25 years since I last saw a start line.
Enter C P Farrow who graciously took me under his wing, and threatened me with certain death in the event I chose not to ride the "Heck of the North."
Suddenly I had to train, and practice, and train and practice.
Leaving my house at 9:00 pm to ride for hours on end, up again at 4:00am to ride even further.
Riding on snow and ice? How can that be?
What is this about I thought? hmmm . . . strangely, having fun, enjoying myself. . . "What had I been missing, what's up with that??" I thought.
Now I find a malaise has set upon me. What am I to do?
Enter the CIRREM me thinks! Of course . . . that will do it, lift my spirits, energize my tired, aging legs . . . onward and upward!
Finally, I wonder if we are: Napoleon, Snowball, Boxer and Clover or the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse?

2 oops in 1 ride!

Apparently in our delirium, Tim and I became confused and tried to enter the wrong event . . .

We were willing, but the dogs just wouldn't have us (perhaps because of my orange bike?)
Further homeward bound adventure . . . actual unretouched photo of bike detritus . . .

  Yes boys and girls, my bike actually ended up this way. Fortunately for me, I was not on it. (Tim said later I was going a little too fast for that corner . . .) We'll probably laugh about that one for a while.
  Yesterday was also drama. Seems I let my water freeze. 195 minutes, at full gas is too long to go without water.
  Today when I got home: serious cramps. Thanks to Claire who made me drink pickle juice. It really does work.
  From now on, on all long rides, pickle juice will be my constant companion.

No Illusions

First and foremost, I got into the Trans Iowa this week. I have no illusions (insert laugh track here) about this epic event. My goal is quite simply to have a great time with the instigators . . . and help one of them win. Simple as that . . .
I know most people have no idea what I do when I'm not on my bike.

We have worked tirelessly for nearly two years to introduce this equipment to North America.

Well boys and girls there will be no ridin' this week. I'm off to Texas until Thursday.
I'm meeting my friend Thomas from Austria tonight, and we'll be doing a PTH stone crusher demo sometime Tuesday with the boys from ConFab. Demo area somewhere around Joshua , TX Hopefully the CAT MT665 will show on time.

I'll also be makin' a trip down to Kerrville and Rocksprings. Now I know most of you have no idea where these towns are: About seven hours South of Dallas, and about 1.5 hours West of Austin. This is the Texas hill country, an area I had barely heard of until two years ago. Having spent a couple of weeks there last year, I can tell you . . . it is really beautiful! Don't know if it is part of the "Lance effect," but there is a strong cycling culture.

All this is OK since on Thursday's ride I toasted my rear shifter; none to be had in Duluth, had to order one. It will be back on the bike by Friday morning . . . and I'll be back on the trail in time to support Charlie, Jason and Jeremy at the Arrowhead 135. I look forward to watchin' and doin' whatever they need done.

I'm happy to learn my friends Jim Joynes and Tim Sieh are out riding and enjoying the trails. I hope to get them hooked up with the "instigators . . ."

Who would have thought a little trail grooming would have made that much difference?
Lester River trail groomed Tuesday night resulted in a 25% overall speed reduction, and a 50% increase in effort.
For the first time since Christmas I was reduced to walking several hills.
Oh well . . . suck it up and get over it. done . . .

It's been really great seeing others on the trail. Of special note, the women! I know of one gal who has been on that trail a number of times, including yesterday. I dare say, yesterday's ride was one of the toughest of the last 12 months, plain and simple.

Gee Whiz . . . for all the warm weather over the weekend, riding was a bit tough. Funny, uphill easier than downhill . . . bike wants to scoot all over the trail.
It was nice to see and ride with 3 others on Sunday.
O2 on the other hand was apparently in a surly mood. At about 1.5 hours, the chain came off . . . that has not happened since I installed the chain catcher and bash guard. I found it odd that 1) it came off and 2) I could put it back on. Started riding, looked down, the chain ring appeared bent, how could that be I mused . . . no worries, just get home and straighten it. Nah . . . that can't be the problem, hop off the bike . . . sure enough, the bottom bracket is loose.
I can only imagine 3 possible explanations;
1) It is envious of CPF's Merlin, and wants a new titanium bb shell installed (not going to happen).
2) She is tired and wants a rest (get over it).
- or -
3) She somehow heard I spent 1.5 hrs on Saturday with Brian at ExcelCycle in Excelsior (likely the problem . . . pure jealousy, likely explanation).
Yes, I am indeed looking at new bikes. Brian could not have been more kind and helpful. Started out a bit funny, Claire and I walked in . . . and found about 100 beer drinkin' bikers. Turned out it was the awards ceremony for an ice bike race on the lake.
Brian showed me 3 bikes: 1) Ridley 2) Stevens 3) BH All 3 he says have distinctly different personalities. I must go back soon and ride 'em and decide. I can not say enough good stuff about Brian. I actually think he was listening to me, not just trying to sell me something. Good on 'ya Brian.
I am fearful my Duluth riding buddies may delist, disown and in general dis me . . . all 3 are full carbon. I say . . "get over it!" In the words of some immortal, somewhere: TOLIET PAPER: If the voyageurs would have had it, they would have used it.
I can't wait to get back down there . . .just have to find time.
Claire says "the BH," Me, I am fully undecided . . .
Funny, this bike has no impact on O2, or O1 for that matter ... It is just another bike . . .

Requiem

After reading recent posts by 1) Kershaw 2) Buffington and 3) C"Pugsley"Farrow, I realize I have it all wrong . . . I rarely bother to reflect, review or remember (I'm too old for that).
With that said, a brief litany of 2009:

1) Riding after earning that yellow wrist band the hard way in late 2008. (I hope none of you earn one.)
2) Riding with many, many individuals and groups over the course of the year.
3) Ah yes . . . time at the Mocha Moose.
4) Not the finish . . . but the start of the Heck of the North. I had not been to any start line since 1985. What a gas . . . a big Thank You to Mr Jeremy Kershaw!
5) Those epic rides during October and December with the aptly named "Instigators"
6) How many miles? I won't answer this one. However for those few who know, and were paying attention: Yup, I got there.
7) Realizing you really "only need one" (road = 46X16, even while climbing)
8) The biggest "yeeha of 2009" On 21 November, then again on 29 November, at the culmination of rides exceeding 100 miles (170km), going toe to toe, nose to nose, face to face . . . yes mano y mano with a well known local rider whose surname gets longer when abbreviated, locked in a full on, full out effort from the Lake to the top of Hawk Ridge . . . to be pipped at the end!
Why you may ask is my biggest moment of 2009 a surrender . . . a defeat . . . dishonor. Because in some perverse way, I know it is the only time I am at 100%.

2010 shall bring:
1) AGRS . . . can't wait to start. Thanks Chris, Jeremy and others.
2) More time on the mtn bike. Gotta learn how to do that better, humbling at best.
3) I have asked Whitey to find me a bike (with more than one gear, can I handle that?)
4) More of 2009, and never . . . ever looking back.
5) Another finger of rum for all . . .

Ran into Gus riding a Pugsley on Saturday. First time I've really followed and watched one! What a joy to behold . . . dancing graciously across the snow. (At this juncture, many authors would indite something about "a saline solution welling from the corners of my eyes." I will resist the temptation)

Thanks to Gus for pointing out the mysterious brick structure across the Lester River. I wonder what it was?

It was great to see three other riders out on the trail!

  OK . . . I exited the trails at Lester River around 5:00 PM Tuesday night, no other tracks to be seen (other than snowmobile, dogs and walkers).
  When I returned on Wednesday afternoon, around 1:00 . . . I found myself following a strange set of tracks . . . fat, slow and dancing from side to side like a drunken sailor (perhaps scurrying, like a white rabbit?).
  What could these tracks be I asked myself?
  Only two possibilities come to mind:
1: The wiley FARROW training in secret, under the cover of darkness
2: SASQUATCH (on skis?)
  My guess: FARROW

The Way I Thought it Would Be! ('ceptin' Jackson)

Just as I envisioned: Yesterday cold . . . bluebird . . . hard and fast! In a word, a happy perfect ride, 2hrs 45min.
  Rode laps on the forlorn NS Ultra course, too darn bad it had to be cancelled . . . oh well, maybe next year?
  For once I listened to an experienced friend who told me to "ride cold." Yes, this is the first time I was not overdressed.
  Another important first: My first winter snow ride where my bike did not go left as I went right! Not a single fall. Only had to walk one hill (the steep hill near the hockey rink), I even had a difficult time getting up it on foot, glaze shiney ice.
  I do need to learn what gear to be in while climbing a steep hill after a steep descent. Seems a bit tricky, spun out a couple of times . . . did not let that stop me, just turned my bike around, rode downhill . . . and back up from the bottom. I even learned how to start from a dead stop halfway up. Of course I am not quite sure why I am working on these skills, since after all: I am a roadie . . .
  The day's only drama: While peacefully riding along, minding my own business (it is always going to be drama when I am "minding my own business") . . . I hear a noise and sense a presence behind me. Of course I assume it is one or more of my ne'er-do-well friends sneaking up . . . Suddenly a big brown apparition appears to my right: JACKSON das weimaraner . . . pulling a brown coated skijorer. Her constant commands of "on by" duly ignored by Jackson . . . Jackson running and pulling from left to right / right to left, out of control . . . then the lunge . . . and the feeling of Jackson against my right bicep (these are big dogs!) . . . the best acceleration I can muster to escape . . . all quite for one minute, then . . . teeth clamping around my elbow . . . how can this be?
  Again, a brief acceleration, then a moment of lucidity as I realize I must stop and explain to this skijorer that this is not acceptable dog behavior.
  If I even suspected the Arrowhead 135 would be this nice . . . who knows, perhaps I would give it a go . . . even with Jackson.

NOTE TO SELF (or how to extend riding time by one hour): Next time you ask your riding buddies if this trail connects to (insert name here), and they reply with a brief pause, "yes . . ." be sure to get additional details.

Their trickery did however allow me to see this:

Yes, those actually are oranges hanging from a tree. I am told it attracts orioles. It also attracts orange bicycles. There were also a couple of hanging bagels. What do they attract?

My oldest daughter Lauren has become a fabulous rider of the rollers. Her fashion sense is however somewhat suspect:

Mallory Cache Plundered

Mallory Cache Plundered Foul Play Feared

It was learned yesterday at approximately 22:00 GMT ( 4:00 pm local time), that the last known cache of Sir George Mallory ( 1886 – 1924 ) has been plundered.

A somewhat thorough investigation of the site found "no rum remaining . . ," the cache empty and devoid, much as the tomb robbers of ancient Egypt left the hallowed halls of their rulers.

Due to the serious, heinous and somewhat diabolical nature of the crime, the requisite 27 8X10 color glossy photos (with circles and arrows on the back) were forwarded to Ms Abby Sucito (of NCIS fame) for analysis.

Using the most advanced equipment available, Ms Scuito digitally enhanced, and removed the last snowfall from said photos. It was evident that four bicycles had recently visited the site (one with "skinny tyres"). Further, a small piece of glass with what appeared to be the letters:

"Du_ _ i."

A final, somewhat perplexing and worrisome clue: a small piece of what appears to be a diaper was found discarded nearby.

Investigators are focused on five, usual suspects: Kershaw, Farrow, Buffington, Ek (sp?) and Hendricks. Of the five most have solid alibis:

Buffington in jail

Ek (sp?) solidly in the "hurt tank"

Kershaw, at home preparing toboggan for young cute daughter

This leaves Hendricks and Farrow. It is well known that until recently, Hendricks was indeed a rider of "skinny tyres." This coupled with his known habit of tipping over whilst offroad may lead one to consider him the prime suspect.

However, when he had the chance to ride away to freedom at TUSCOBIA, he instead pulled out early, humiliated and humbled.

This leaves none-other-than Farrow, the wily Farrow who admits training with deer.

Authorities have pledged to keep Farrow under surveillance until further notice.

Sunday's goal: Four solo "road" hours. Goal achieved. Roads a bit better than Saturday, until I passed the Zimmerman Road . . . Then I can only surmise that I was "on the road . . ." no real idea most of the time. About one mile up, a snow squall, nearly complete white out for the 20 minutes it took to ride two miles. Once on the Normana Rd conditions improved. Of course this turn of events made me think: "Why not ride some of the HoTN course?" So off I went . . . Keeping on the Normana Rd I suddenly realized "there is a lot more snow up here! No, a lot more snow." It was beautiful . . . the squall abated, the wind at my back, all was right with the world. A brief stop at the North Shore Trail crossing: Gee . . . I can almost ride it! Right turn onto the French River Road . . . Now the question becomes: If a gravel road is covered with 2+ inches of glaze ice, is it still a gravel road, or is it a 1) Eis road 2) Ijs road 3) Glace road or even 4) Ghiaccio su stada? The next two hours, 20 miles were at times sheer madness. I know the guy in the big yellow loader/snowplow thought I was nuts. Of course by this time I had no choice but to finish. (I am of course still paying penance for my humbling experience at TUSCOBIA. Humbled by none other than Buffington, Farrow and assorted other characters. Never again shall that happen.)

At this stage, some three hours and 30+ miles into my day, seeing no dry pavement, riding on inches of ice: no real problem. Then . . . as I make a right turn from the West Tischer Rd onto the steep uphill of the Wabasha Rd . . . disaster strikes! The snow plow operators had thoughtfully laid down a layer of sand and ice melt. Once would only think that act would improve conditions: But no! My trusty Orange companion decides of her own accord to lay down!

So the question becomes: DOES IT COUNT as a fall when a bike falls (of its own volition) , while the lonesome rider stays completely upright? I say NO! (much like a tree falling in a forest, we know it makes no sound if there is no one to hear it)

I'm learning there is much to this winter biking idea. It is easy to overdress. I drink a lot more as I ride. Speeds are much slower than I ever anticipated. Muscles soreness unknown in the summer. Beautiful scenery.

Total for day: Four hours, 42 miles, full on effort . . .

First real winter road ride

Had a great solo three hour ride yesterday out and about the icy roads of the rural Duluth landscape.

I know I was not alone, saw a set of tracks going out . . . and coming back. I can only wonder who it was!

BRAVO to the snow plow operators . . . all roads cleared! A heartfelt thank you for giving up much of your Christmas holiday.

I do wonder: Why on icy roads do so many of the motor vehicles tailgate? Seems kind of silly.

Looking forward to more of this! I hope the trails firm up soon . . .

I have lots to learn about winter riding. Even at age 53 I still remember my mom never letting me on my bike until all the snow and ice was gone . . . I wonder what she would think of this?

It's really fun climbing icy snow covered hills. I'm enjoying standing, loosing traction . . . and working to find just how to stand and pedal. Actually a lot more fun going uphill than down.

I'm really happy with a couple of things:

1) Lake winter riding shoes: These thing really do work as advertised! Money spent ($275): well worth it. It is a great feeling knowing I can be ready to ride without spending hours of time. I bought mine in size "wide," I think this is perfect, I can add a pair of liner socks, yet the boots feel as if they fit. Thanks to Lucky at The Ski Hut for the special order.

2) I'm using "Boot Gloves" instead of cycling shoe covers. They seem to work well. Since they are designed for downhill ski boots, they go on quickly.

3) Giro "Fuse" snowboard helmet. Really happy with this solution. The Fuse weighs only a couple ounces more than a cycling helmet, so weight is not an issue. Of great importance, the Fuse has vents that can be opened and closed (while riding). This is a great addition. I've taken the ear flaps off (too warm), but know I will be putting them back on soon.
